The use of video in recruitment is on the up, according to a survey of HR directors. Four in 10 are making more use of video conferencing to keep in touch with out-of-town candidates, research from OfficeTeam UK found.
A key driver behind the increased use of video in recruitment is a continued shortage of suitable candidates. OfficeTeam found that the majority (89%) of senior executives felt it was ‘somewhat’ or ‘very challenging’ to find skilled professionals. Small and medium-sized organisations found it the most difficult, according to the survey.
Improving technology has also played a role in the more widespread adoption of video interviewing: more than half of the HR directors surveyed said that they now have access to better video conferencing tools. Other reasons included increased recruitment of international candidates, availability of low-cost tools such as Skype, and to avoid commuting.
Phil Sheridan, managing director of OfficeTeam UK said: “Technology is continually advancing, so it seems fitting that businesses take advantage of the ease of convenience it offers. However, video conferencing should not replace traditional means of assessing and hiring a candidate, which can only be gleaned by an in-person meeting.”
