Skills remain biggest challenge for recovering recruitment sector, research says

A shortage of skilled candidates is the biggest challenge facing recruiters, with the technology, finance and insurance and manufacturing sectors experiencing the biggest skills gaps.

Seventy-nine per cent of the respondents to the Bullhorn 2014 UK Recruitment Trends Report admitted there is a shortage of skilled candidates for their respective markets. This is a slight drop on last year’s survey, in which 89% cited this challenge.

Of those recruiters experiencing a shortage of skilled candidates, 33% are in the technology sector, 19% in finance and insurance and 18% for the manufacturing sector.

However, a richer candidate talent pool was among the reasons cited by the nearly 200 recruiters surveyed for meeting their revenue goals last year. Fill rate increased for 52% of candidates.

Social media usage and the economic recovery were attributed to a better performance in 2013 with 80% of respondents meeting their revenue goals last year. Ninety five per cent expect revenue increases this year. Salary increases are also expected this year – by 83% of respondents.

For the first time the research included agency revenue, which when compared with size revealed a chasm between large and small agency revenues.

“We dug even deeper than usual in this year’s report and secured more information about revenue and remuneration than ever before,” said Peter Linas, international managing director, Bullhorn. “The results this year set the benchmark for recruiter salaries and also reveal a startling chasm in revenue per producer between small recruitment businesses and large agencies.”
