Hiring intentions are returning to pre-recession levels, according to the latest UK Employment Outlook survey by recruitment company Manpower.
Its index revealed that +8% of UK employers plan to take on staff during the third quarter of 2014, an improvement on the second quarter of this year, when the outlook was +7%.
In Scotland, uncertainty around the forthcoming independence vote has not dampened hiring prospects – Scottish employers also reported a +8% outlook. Scottish job prospects have been boosted by the Commonwealth Games, which will boost the region’s vacancy numbers by around 1,000 this summer.
Mark Cahill, ManpowerGroup UK’s managing director, said that nationally, there was “broad-based growth across permanent roles, the self-employed and contractors”.
It’s likely that retail and leisure jobs have been boosted by the World Cup, added Cahill, with the employment outlook in this sector at its most positive since 2007.
Recent reports echo this prediction: the supermarket chain Morrisons has pledged to take on hundreds of new staff, while Domino’s Pizza will recruit 1,300 extra staff to deliver pizzas over the course of the tournament.
Employment in the public sector is also starting to improve, according to Manpower. The public sector outlook is up six points compared to last quarter, at +8%.
Cahill added: “There has been a shift in the type of applicant that public sector organizations are seeking. Along with more traditional roles, public sector employers are recruiting flexible candidates who can help implement the changes we’ve seen in public service provision.”
