A leading Westminster think tank is launching two new surveys to shed light on the issue of employment status and to explore the changing nature of work in the UK.
The Social Market Foundation (SMF) has revealed that the first survey will ask businesses about how they use contractors and self-employed workers, while the second will question individuals about the reasons behind their decision to work as a contractor or as self-employed.
The SMF surveys are aimed at workers, end users, recruiters, contractors and providers, and form part of a research project which the SMF is undertaking looking into the position of contract and self-employed workers in the UK labour market.
This research is supported by PRISM, while the SMF retains full editorial control over all of its outputs.
Commenting on the launch of the surveys, SMF Director Emran Mian said: “We are asking employers of all sizes to tell us how they use contractors or self-employed workers. We also want to hear from workers about their experiences of employment and self-employment.
“We hope that this survey will provide useful data on the issue of employment status and the changing nature of work in the UK.”
Chief Executive of PRISM, Crawford Temple, added: “A lack of credible information is a critical problem when studying the world of work.
“It is imperative that as many contractors, recruiters, providers and engagers as possible complete the survey to give the SMF the best possible evidence base.”
