Could recruitment companies be as flexible as Uber?

A job where you can work whatever hours you like and work from absolutely anywhere in the world sounds ideal to everyone, doesn’t it?

Yet the standard working model for a recruitment agency is incredibly out-dated, inefficient and is not good for the wellbeing of employees. Recruiter culture – which is very much ‘work hard, party hard’ – can be attractive to youngsters new to the industry, but is not a healthy way to live in the long-term.

This is exactly why we decided to re-write the rules, meaning consultants can work from anywhere, doing the hours they choose.

From our collective experience, we know first hand that the recruiter lifestyle culture is not sustainable, which is ultimately not profitable in the long-term. We believe that no one should be getting recruiter burnout.

Our company offers independent recruitment consultants the chance to earn up to 80% commission, earn an override of 5% from recruiting new consultants AND set their own hours. No recruiter burn-out, no pointless meetings and no targets.

When we set up this new business, we believed there was a better way to create and run a recruitment network. One that enabled consultants to work independently and also give them the chance to be a part of growing that network.

We see ourselves as the Uber of recruitment – enabling good recruiters to set up independently, with no overheads and a great support network. The network grows itself and there is no need for a management structure because each consultant is responsible for his or her own work.

We also found that the traditional nine to five model is out-dated and is really inefficient for our industry. Of course, we all know that very few jobs – recruitment or otherwise – are actually nine to five.

In the recruitment industry especially, recruiters often work late into the evenings because it is the only time that a candidate can talk freely on the phone.

Additionally, we found in previous companies that having meeting after meeting is highly ineffective to working practices. In offices around the globe, people have meetings because that’s what they’ve always done but they very rarely achieve much from them.

In addition to this, we now have access to so much technology that makes our lives and jobs so much easier, yet our standard working hours have not reduced accordingly. Shouldn’t we ALL be using technology to make tasks quicker and therefore enjoy more leisure time?

So how does our new model of recruitment agency actually work?

We firmly believe that our independent recruitment consultants should set their own hours around their own working needs, their clients’ needs, their candidates’ needs – and yes, around their own personal lives.

While it might suit one person to get up at 6am and do a lot of their research work and then take their dogs for a long walk for the afternoon, it might suit someone else to spend the morning in the gym, start work at lunchtime and work through until 8pm.

Our new style of working also suits anyone with a family, so they can choose to work around school drop-off and pick up times. So yes, our independent consultants can work whatever hours they choose around their lives, their families and their own preferences.

In addition to this, they can work wherever they like as well. Indeed, if they want to spend some time travelling or living abroad, they can do this as well. We provide consultants with state-of-the-art technology, which enables them to work from the cloud from any computer, in any location.

Agencies looking to do this will also need to support their consultants with back office admin support, billing, factoring, access to all the major job boards, as well as a network of meeting rooms available for their use across the UK.

However, this style of working isn’t suitable for everyone. It really does only work for people who are entrepreneurial and have the get-up and go to work for themselves. Anyone who wants to be told what to do every day is not going to get very far in this sort of environment.

We’re committed to finding our own way and setting up a company that works around our people – and not the other way round. You can find out more about how we work here.
